Today, Wagenborg reported to Short Sea News that its general cargo vessel Eikborg is safely under tow from an assisting tug off the coast of Figueira da Foz, Portugal and expected to arrive in the port of Villa Garcia by tomorrow morning. All crew on board are safe.
Eikborg suffered damage to its rudder upon departure from the port of Figueira da Foz on January 26 and due to its restricted maneuverability had since remained in a holding position off the coast. No pollution occurred as a result of the incident.
Throughout the event Wagenborg has been in close contact with the local authorities on the safeguarding of the ship and the consequent towage operation.
As soon as possible Wagenborg will be making a first assessment of the damage to the vessel.
The exact cause of the incident is yet unknown with a full investigation to follow.
