Wind speeds of 97 kilometres per hour were measured in Wijk aan Zee and 92 kilometres per hour in Zeeland, according to Weerplaza. In Rotterdam's Waalhaven, containers were blown onto parked cars. Trees were also blown over in many places.
With wind speeds on the coast reaching just under 100 kilometres per hour, the stormy weather is in line with expectations, says Berend van Straaten of Weerplaza. He expects the gusts to continue until late Monday evening. ‘It will only start to ease off a little during the night.’
Earlier, the KNMI had issued a code yellow warning for the coastal provinces from 12 noon on Monday. Van Straaten also expects heavy rain during the course of Monday evening. ‘There could be heavy showers, especially in the north of the country,’ he says.
In Rotterdam's Waalhaven, containers were blown over by the strong winds, the safety region confirmed to NU.nl. Those containers landed on four parked cars. No one was in the cars and no one was injured.
Safety regions are also receiving many calls about fallen trees, reports the ANP press agency. This is the case in the north and east of the Netherlands, Groningen, North Brabant and Rotterdam-Rijnmond, among other places. According to Weerplaza, the risk of trees falling is high because trees still have many leaves at this time of year and therefore catch extra wind. The wind can also blow branches loose, as can be seen in the photo below.

Ferries remain ashore and flower parade cancelled
The stormy weather is also causing disruption elsewhere. For example, the province of Friesland is only operating bridges when wind conditions allow. A ferry operated by Doeksen shipping company received assistance near Harlingen to moor safely. The sailings scheduled for later in the day have been cancelled.
On the Markerwaarddijk between Lelystad and Enkhuizen, there is a ban on overtaking and a maximum speed of 70 kilometres per hour due to the stormy weather, reports FlevoWegen on X.
The parade after the flower parade in Lichtenvoorde, a procession of moving floats, was also cancelled on Monday morning. Although there is no code yellow in Gelderland, the organisation did not want to take any risks. The organisation calls it ‘a disappointment’.
