Netherlands based Vertom continues its commitment to renewing their fleet of Short Sea ships with the delivery of the seventh vessel in the LABRAX diesel electric series. The Willemijn was built and launched by Thecla Bodewes Shipyards in December and has since completed its seatrials before being handed over.
The Willemijn, along with the 12 other LABRAX series ships, features 7,280dwt in dry cargo capacity and a diesel electric propulsion. The propulsion system uses four generator sets to minimise energy consumption and thus reduces greenhouse gas emissions and lowers overall maintenance costs. While the propulsion of the ship is its main distinguishing feature - representing vertom’s commitment to sustainability and innovation - the ship also features a length of 118.6m and a beam of 14.3m. Allowing for two box fully box shaped cargo holds and a total capacity of 9336m3.

Vertom asserts that a combined optimised hull that minimises resistance and maximises efficiency combined with the diesel electric propulsion system reduces the Carbon Dioxide emissions of the ship and complies with the latest International maritime organisation (IMO) regulations. In addition the ships are said to be, “Future ready” and prepared to integrate alternate fuels with the shipping industry’s shift towards removing emissions. Not only does the Willemijn and the rest of the LABRAX series reduce Carbon Dioxide emissions during operations but Vertom and by extension Thecla Bodewes Shipyards use a holistic view of sustainability in their fleet renewal commitments. Thecla Bodewes’s Project developer Wilco Smit has stated that the LABRAX series is a, “perfect example of how the yard is using local suppliers.” While Vertom themselves say that the fixed pitch propeller shaft line system and various other energy saving measures significantly reduce various Nitrogen Oxide emissions.
The resulting partnership between Thecla Bodewes Shipyards and Vertom Group demonstrates leadership in environmentally responsible maritime transport. Dedicated to shaping the future of maritime transport with sustainable, innovative solutions. The MV Vertom Willemijn represents not only a technical achievement but also a shared vision for a greener future.
